Me interesa ver las formas en que el contexto de la Ciudad de México, la arquitectura habitacional y su sonoridad, impregna los espacios públicos (y privados), me interesa explorar cómo esta relación puede moldear mi relación con mi práctica artística.

Durante el año pasado gracias a una beca en The Union for Contemporary Art en Omaha, NE, mi investigación y proceso artístico giraron en torno a los edificios como monumentos, las historias que dan forma al paisaje de un vecindario y una comunidad, y la arquitectura como símbolo y evidencia de - memoria colectiva.

Más específicamente, esta investigación fue sobre la Exposición Trans-Mississippi de 1898, una feria mundial que tuvo lugar en Omaha; pero nunca fue construia para durar y que rápidamente fue destruia después de ser hecha. Me enteré de que todas las construcciones de la feria se hicieron con yeso para poder quitarlas más fácilmente.
La feria buscó mostrar los recursos, el dinero y la prosperidad potencial de "Occidente", pero todas sus características fueron construidas con los materiales más baratos. Esto dio como resultado edificios y estatuas enormes y grandiosas que eran estructuralmente endebles, una metáfora adecuada para el Sueño Americano y la reputación actual de los Estados Unidos.

I’m interested to see the waysin which the context of Mexico City—specifically theautoconstrucción of homes and the sound that permeatespublic (and private) spaces—can shape my relation to thisnew material within my artistic practice.

Over the past year, while in a fellowship at The Union for Contemporary Art in Omaha, NE, my research and artisticprocess revolved around buildings as monuments, historiesthat shape the landscape of a neighborhood and community,and architecture as both a symbol for--and evidence of--collective memory.

More specifically, this investigation was about the Trans-Mississippi Exposition of 1898, a world’s fair that took placein Omaha; but it was never built to last and it was quicklydestroyed after being built. I learned that all of theconstructions in the fair were created out of plaster so theycould be removed more easily. The fair sought to show theresources, money, and the potential prosperity of the “West,”but all of its features were constructed with the cheapest ofmaterials. This resulted in huge, grandiose buildings andstatues that were structurally flimsy—a fitting metaphor forthe American Dream and the United States’ present-dayreputation.
