Ilona Balaga es una artista multidisciplinaria radicada en Londres que trabaja con una amplia gama de medios, incluyendo instalación, escultura, dibujo, collage, video, sonido y performance. El trabajo de Balaga revisita relatos cotidianos de espacios públicos y domésticos, investigando las formas en que nos relacionamos física y mentalmente con los materiales que nos rodean. Centrándose en las interrelaciones entre espacio, material y tiempo, Balaga aborda los materiales que utiliza como recipientes de actividad y portadores de memoria. A través de su reordenamiento, su obra examina cómo se construyen el lenguaje y el significado, desafiando ideas de propiedad, poder e historia.
Incorporando nociones de desplazamiento, absurdo, estructura y azar, Balaga reinterpreta las complejas dinámicas entre el sujeto y el contexto, sugiriendo posibilidades alternativas que sacan lo cotidiano de su banalidad habitual y cuestionan el límite entre la vida y el arte.
Tomando como referencia el contexto geológico y cultural único de la Ciudad de México, durante su estancia en The Lab, Ilona creará una nueva instalación específica para el sitio que reflexiona sobre dos de los motivos recurrentes en su trabajo: el agua y la construcción.
Balaga es egresada del MFA de la Slade School of Fine Art (2023) y tiene una licenciatura en Bellas Artes con honores (BAFA Hons) del Chelsea College of Art and Design (2016). Ha exhibido su trabajo en varias exposiciones colectivas, incluyendo Staffordshire St. Gallery, Londres (2023); Scoppio Terzo, Terni, Italia (2022); The Wrong Biennale, 5ª edición, online (2021); OnCurating Project Space, Zúrich (2021); y el Museo de Arte de Haifa, Israel (2020).
Además, ha presentado su obra en dos exposiciones individuales: Conventional Signs (2021) en el Museo Bar-David, Kibbutz Baram, y Eye of the Storm (2019) en Balcont, Tel Aviv. Es miembro fundadora de Balcont, un espacio artístico sin fines de lucro y liderado por artistas en Tel Aviv (2018-2021). Su residencia en The Lab Program está apoyada por les artistes.

Balaga’s work revisits day-to-day accounts from public and domestic spaces , investigating the ways we engage with materials around us both physically and mentally. Focusing on the interrelations between space, material, and time, Balaga approaches the materials she uses as vessels of activity and carriers of memory.
Through their rearrangement, her work examines how language and meaning are constructed while challenging ideas of ownership, power, and history. Incorporating notions of displacement, absurdity, structure, and chance, Balaga reworks the complex dynamics between the subject and the context while suggesting alternative possibilities that take the everyday out of its mundane banality, questioning the boundary between life and art.
Drawing from Mexico City's unique geological and cultural context, during her stay at The Lab, Ilona will create a new site-specific installation which reflects on two of the recurring motifs in her work—Water and Construction.

She is the founding member of Balcont, a non-profit artist-led space and studios in Tel-Aviv (2018-2021). Her residency at The Lab Program is supported by Artist.
Durante Enero de 2025, como parte de The Lab Program: Art-Research & Mobility Network en la Ciudad de México, Ilona Balaga desarrolló una serie de obras en sitio, trabajando bajo el sol y sobre el lecho rocoso de la Reserva del Pedregal, una formación geológica compuesta principalmente de basalto.
A través de escaneos tridimensionales hechos a mano, usando la técnica de frottage y capas de laminado de aluminio, Balaga exploró preguntas sobre la temporalidad de estos cuerpos que, aunque parecen estáticos y solidificados, revelan transformaciones constantes a lo largo del tiempo.
Este trabajo marcó el inicio de una investigación sobre el tiempo, los ciclos del agua y su interacción con la Ciudad de México. Su obra, de carácter procesual y efímero, crea un puente entre las transformaciones geológicas y las dinámicas urbanas, abordando las profundas conexiones entre cuerpos humanos y no humanos que habitan la ciudad.

During January 2025, as part of The Lab Program: Art-Research & Mobility Network in Mexico City, Ilona Balaga developed a series of site-specific works, working under the sun on the rocky bed of the Pedregal Reserve, a geological formation composed primarily of basalt.
Through manual forming technique using tin sheets, and the frottage technique, Balaga explored questions surrounding the temporality of these bodies which, although appear static and solidified, reveal ongoing transformations over time.
This work marked the beginning of an inquiry into time, water cycles, and their interaction with Mexico City. Her time-based and process-oriented practice creates a bridge between geological transformations and urban dynamics, addressing the deep connections between human and non-human bodies inhabiting the city.
