Ana Maria Marcu

Ana Maria Marcu nació en Rumania y emigró a Canadá con su familia en 1999.
Recientemente se gradúo con un BFA en Fotografía en la Universidad de Concordia en Montreal. La mayoría de su producción trabaja temas respecto a la sexualidad, la vigilancia y la inmigración, utilizando su propia historia familiar y el simbolismo cultural del espacio digital para narrar algunas preguntas respecto a estos temas.
Su obra se ha mostrado en diferentes espacios de los que destacan: "Povestea Ie" CPC x Cartier Des Spectacles, (2021). "Maria" Nuit Blanche x Art Matters, (2019), "Seeing Me, Seeing You", Ecole Public x Deneb.
Durante su tiempo en el lab se enfocará en usar materiales en la ciudad que le permitan establecer relaciones sobre el cuerpo, la sexualidad y la desnudez, a través del espacio y las relaciones y restricciones culturales propias del contexto.

Su interés principal es ahondar en la mirada masculina para transformar el cuerpo femenino en algo completamente distinto a la norma o convención patriarcal.

Ana Maria Marcu was born in Romania and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1999.
Marcu recently got a BFA in Photography from Concordia University in Montreal. Most of Marcu’s art making is interested in exploring themes regarding sexuality, surveillance and immigration, using their own family history and the cultural symbolism of the digital space, Marcu’s narrates some questions regarding these themes. Ana Maria’s work has been shown in different spaces, including: "Povestea Ie" CPC x Cartier Des Spectacles, (2021), "Maria" Nuit Blanche x Art Matters, (2019), "Seeing Me, Seeing You" Ecole Public x Deneb.
During Marcu’s time in residency she will focus on using materials found in the city that potentially allow her to establish relationships about the body, sexuality, and nudity, through space and within the cultural relationships and restrictions of the context.

Ana Maria’s main interest is to delve into the male gaze, in order to transform the female body into something completely different from the patriarchal norm or convention.

Con Inhabilitando lo Femenino (video-instalación, 17'58”, video en loop, color, 2023) la artista utiliza lo monstruoso femenino, considerando algunos apuntes de la crítica de cine Barbara Creed, para re-contextualizar estas ideas desde la Ciudad de México.
Lo monstruosamente femenino, se presenta en esta videoinstalación como introducción a un proyecto más largo, donde la artista intenta ir más allá del arquetípico X/X y de su capacidad corporal reproductiva. En este intento, la obra de Marcu pretende desbordar lo femenino, utilizando sus símbolos, prótesis, miradas públicas y encarnaciones, para desentrenar la mirada sobre lo femenino como afirmación.

Monstrosity is used by Ana Maria Marcu to build a speculative fiction about the feminine. Her work is an attempt to disable the male gaze towards this category of female embodiment.
With "Disabling the Feminine” (17'58", video in loop, color, 2023) the artist uses the monstrous feminine, considering some notes by film theorist Barbara Creed, to situate these ideas in the context of Mexico City.
The monstrous feminine is presented in this video-installation as an introduction for a longer project, where the artist tries to go beyond the archetypal X/X and its reproductive corporeal capacity. Marcu’s work aims to dramatize the feminine, using archetypal symbols, prosthetics, and public gazes to disrupt the female norms.
