Sybren Janssens es una artista que vive y trabaja en Gante, Bélgica. En 2021 se graduó de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes, KASK y obtuvo su maestría en el departamento de Diseño Autónomo/Artes Visuales.

Su práctica navega con difrentes medios, pregntandose sobre la hiperrealidad, y la filosofía del "bricolaje" en su sentido más amplio: práctico, al involucrarse con todo lo que nos rodea; y conceptual, al responder constantemente a la realidad presente, mientras nos involucramos de manera lúdica, como una respuesta a los eventos y circunstancias en curso.

Durante su estancia en México abordará el concepto de bricolaje para poder establecer nuevas preguntas al respecto, tomando en cuenta las particularidades espaciales de esta ciudad.

Sybren Janssens is an artist who lives and works in Ghent, Belgium. In 2021, they graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, KASK, and obtained their master's degree in the Department of Autonomous Design/Visual Arts.

Their practice navigates through different mediums, exploring the concepts of hyperreality and the philosophy of "bricolage" in its broadest sense: practical, by engaging with everything that surrounds us, and conceptual, by constantly responding to the present reality while playfully engaging with it, as a response to ongoing events and circumstances.

During their stay in Mexico, they will delve into the concept of bricolage to establish new inquiries, taking into account the unique spatial characteristics of this city.

"Glyde of Passage" Instalación, 2023, Sybren Janssens
Glyde of Passage incorporates the scale and fragmented landscape from Sybren Janssens' initial on-site explorations in Mexico City.
It captures the immense dimensions of a megalopolis, questioning the magnitude of an ever-evolving urban landscape. The site-specific installation utilizes drawing and collage techniques, showcasing Janssens' ability to blend images from varied contexts—digital, captured, and his current pictorial archive during his residency in the city. These elements forge new narratives, infused with humor, to navigate the intricate sense of scale within a city.

The imaginative vigor in this recreational, almost architectural model installation enables the artist to explore additional themes present in his artistic practice. Among these is an investigation into how reenactment can have an impact on the physical spaces and their elements convey meanings, symbols, and messages.

Environments and locales possess a distinctive language, consciously or unconsciously communicating information and significance to those who engage with them.
​
Glyde of Passage represents Sybren Janssens' journey through diverse narratives, skillfully weaving visual elements to capture the complex essence of urban landscapes. Certain pieces, such as 'God will send us money,' delve into inquiries about circular economies and the contrast between fine arts' labor and traditional craftsmanship. This specific piece was commissioned by Janssens to Taller de Piñatas at the Mercado Medellin-Merced. The complete installation of Glyde of Passage was meticulously constructed from cardboard obtained from recycling centers, spotlighting the metamorphosis of 'refurbished' materials through a form of everyday bricolage technique and economy.— Valeria Montoya

Glyde of Passage incorpora la escala y el paisaje fragmentado de las exploraciones iniciales de Sybren Janssens en la Ciudad de México. Captura las inmensas dimensiones de una megalópolis, cuestionando la magnitud de un paisaje urbano en constante evolución. La instalación específica del sitio utiliza técnicas de dibujo y collage, mostrando la habilidad de Janssens para combinar imágenes de contextos diversos: digitales, capturadas y su archivo pictórico actual durante su residencia en la ciudad. Estos elementos crean nuevas narrativas, impregnadas de humor, para navegar la intrincada sensación de escala dentro de una ciudad.
La vitalidad imaginativa en esta instalación recreativa, casi arquitectónica, permite al artista explorar temas adicionales presentes en su práctica artística. This installation emerges from the transformation of the space, showcasing a myriad of photographs captured during my time in Mexico. It's a fusion of my archival digital images with those sourced from the Internet. Alongside these photographic compositions, drawings and sculptures emerge, creating a vast sketch or collage, almost resembling a landscape within the new floor and walls. A spectacular short scale, desert-like landscape portraying fragments of reality, delving into a multitude of signs and symbols. Yet, it swiftly retreats into its own intricate chaos. This landscape aims to seize transience and immediacy, prompting contemplation on scale and perspective.

Esta instalación surge de la transformación del espacio, mostrando una gran cantidad de fotografías capturadas durante mi tiempo en México. Es una fusión de mis imágenes digitales de archivo con aquellas obtenidas de Internet.
Junto a estas composiciones fotográficas, surgen dibujos y esculturas, creando un extenso boceto o collage que casi se asemeja a un paisaje dentro de los nuevos pisos y paredes. Un espectacular paisaje en miniatura, similar a un desierto, que retrata fragmentos de la realidad adentrándose en una multitud de signos y símbolos. Sin embargo, se retira rápidamente hacia su propio caos intrincado. Este paisaje busca capturar la fugacidad y la inmediatez, provocando la contemplación sobre la escala y la perspectiva.
